The Klamath Canoe Trail is the best way to get an up-close and personal experience with local nature and wildlife. Klamath watersheds are one of the only places in the world where you can see Mare’s eggs (nostoc pruniforme) a species of blue-green algae (cyanobacterium) that grow in just a few places in the world.
Between mountain forests, creeks, and lakes, the upper Klamath National Wildlife Refuge, now comprising 14,966 acres of marsh and open water, was established in 1928. With an elevation of slightly above 4,000 feet, it lies in the shadow of the forested east base of the Cascade Mountains and is watered by mountain streams and deep, clear springs that run year-round. Just down the slope from Sky Lakes Wilderness area, many travelers on their way to Crater Lake National park have been amazed and inspired by this nature lovers paradise.
